![]() I can't wait to take it to Germany to see what it does and hw well it does it.Įveryone's going to have their own opinion here, so, I'll add mine The 335D coupe is not a viable replacement for the Z4, but as an every day vehicle and part time back road bruiser. Last weekend i was leading a group of Z cars around the Brecon Brecons and i had no problem keeping up the pace for all my charges to be able to have fun! this is either because it is near its peak torque range or because it can swap as many gears as necessary (by change down or kick down or by the steering wheel mounted gear paddles). Now the important bit in my opinion on the 335D coupe is the "real world" driving expirence! It's just awesome! The automatic gearbox (no manual available) is always on the money such that you will never be caught flat footed when you want to overtake etc.Ĭritically, the engine is capable of developing so much thrust any time you like. the Z4 car has it licked (mine is using H&R arb's and PS2's) i have improved the power output of my Z4 by installing a Miltek full exhaust systems (c/w racing 100 cell cats) the engine has also has had a re-map which has increased the power to 233 bhp not much i know, but the improvement in the torque curve and deliver is much better. How does the 335D compare to the sports car in terms of dynamic performance? the center of gravity being lower in the Z4 has it licked! In terms of outright cornering performance. by comparison my 3.0 is 300 Nm 3500 rpm 220 ft lbs. go figure!)īest of all it packs a whopping 550 Nm of torques 1700 rpm 440 ft lbs. it also is packing 286 bhp but has to propell a portly 1645 kg around (strangely its the same weight as my outging E270 cdi. and yes it does do 0-60 in 6.1s according to BMW. Yes the 335D is a diesel and yes it has an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. (i also have a Radical SR3 for track day use and that is foofing quck 0-60, 0-100 100-20 and round bends etc) This car has been well and truly pushed down all sorts of roads in the UK and the continent. Hi all, i thought that i would input some of my exirences given that i have just covered 2000 miles in my new 335D M sport coupe.Īs a point of reference i also have a Z4 3.0 which is my weekend and fun car (for the last 3 odd years). ![]() I still think the M Roadster is a seriously rapid machine which was designed to be driven and when driven hard, I can't see a diesel rep machine being able to cope with the power difference. The M engine produces it's power high up the rev range where a diesel drops off rapidly so yes, I agree a 50-70 drag might result in a loss for any M Powered car against the mightly 335cd/535d but we by M power for the M Power delivery which is gonna be higher up the rev range. I've noticed that the comparision between the E92 335ci and the 335d have never been equally matched in the sence they both use a 3.0l engine with two turbo's - only key difference is the fuel type. I'd say that this is mainly due to the boost produced by the turbocharger. I understand this comment and being a company car driver accept the fact that in gear excelleration can be breathtaking at times. My 205 GTi could be thrashed all day, off the line or whenever, but the BMW doesn't seem as tough in this respect in that the clutch can overheat easily, and many reviews you'll read about how the clutch started smelling after a couple of launches (E39 M5s I seem to remember were like this). In fact on the CSL there apparently is a recorder which records the number of times this feature is used so BMW can claim it's been raced if, like many owners did, take the car back because the clutch/flywheel had broken. The M3's launch control will still be hard on the car, its still got a clutch. ![]() It's nice to have a good 50-70 time but it greatly depends on the gearing, I would guess the Boxster has taller gearing in top than the Z3, but then 3rd gear is what will cover 50-70 fastest and that is the perofrmance that is being discussed, not the ability to lug long gears as in the real world a 535d would outpace us all I don't know what's worse, someone who takes delight in doing 0-60 runs all the time, or someone who finds 5th gear acceleration better than dropping down a gear. This is a far more pertinent figure, reflecting real driving conditions - see the Autocar test of the 2.5 Porsche Boxster and the 2.8 Z3 - where the 0-60 time of the Porsche was slightly better than the Zed, but the Zed positively slaughtered the Boxster in terms of acceleration in any fixed gear.Ġ-60 times are only of importance for those poor souls who never get out of town!Ī modern turbo diesel is on par if not better than some sports cars these days on in-gear performance. Mike Fishwick wrote:Pgwarren asks if there is a better means of objectively comparing a car's performance - and there is, in the form of 50 to 80 mph in-gear (ie 4th or 5th) acceleration times.
